German School System

The German school system is very different from its American counterpart. Their system is divided into three types of schools that lead students toward a vocational or academic future. German students will attend what is called the Gymnasium. This is a nine-year secondary school that provides a comprehensive general education for students who wish to continue their studies at the university level. Only 30% of German students enter these prestigious schools.

School subjects are divided into three general categories: language, literature and art; the social sciences; and mathematics, science and technology. Students are required to take classes in each of these three categories. Typically subjects such as music, art and physical education, play a minor role in the school system, and students participate in these extra-curricular activities outside of school.

At least one year of high school German language study or demonstrated equivalent is required for semester and academic year programs, as all classes are conducted in German

Students who choose an academic year or a semester program in Germany will live with a host family and attend a local public high school
Requirements
One year of high school German language study, or demonstrated equivalent comprehension (not required for summer program)
15-18 years old at the start of the program
2.5 GPA or higher (4.0 scale)
Flexible and mature personality; desire to be challenged, ability to remain open-minded and tolerant of cultural differences
A letter to your potential host family written in German as part of your complete application

The NYU in Berlin program is based at the prestigious Humboldt University, located near the heart of the city on Unter den Linden. The program features NYU courses, taught by NYU faculty, members of the Humboldt faculty, and Berlin's wider academic community. The program is especially designed for students in social sciences, history, and German studies. Course offerings focus on the society, politics, history, and culture of Germany and contemporary Western Europe. Sociology majors and minors have the opportunity to get credit for up to three required courses in the department. All courses are taught in English with the exception of language courses.

Students are required to take a foundation course, Contemporary Germany in a United Europe, and choose from seminars and lecture courses in German studies, sociology, cultural studies, and European studies, with topics such as The Third Reich and the Holocaust, History and Culture of Berlin, Immigration and Multiculturalism in Today's Germany, and the European Union and Classical Social Theory. While in Berlin, all students also study German at the elementary or more advanced levels.
